Holiday “Gifts” for Title IX Coordinators

Title IX coordinators often lack the training and resources do their jobs effectively. Many are unaware of the full scope of their work and focus exclusively on gender equity in athletics, the most well-known aspect of
Title IX.  While the overarching responsibility of the Title IX coordinator has remained the same since 1975, the challenges of ending sex discrimination have become more complex as new issues such as cyberbullying arise, as existing issues gain broader recognition, and as official guidance becomes
less defined.

Make Outreach to Local Title IX Coordinators a Branch Program

The U.S. Department of Education provides resources to help Title IX coordinators understand the full scope of their jobs, but not all coordinators know about these tools. By making outreach to local K–12 schools, colleges, and universities a branch program, you can help spread the word about these valuable resources.

Delivering resources to schools introduces AAUW to school officials. It also addresses what’s at stake with Title IX and ensures that Title IX coordinators receive these important resources for their jobs. As a branch, plan to split up the schools in your area and divide into groups to make the deliveries.

To go the extra mile, call your local school and ask to speak with the Title IX coordinator to schedule a meeting or to find out the best address for mailing resources. If a school cannot connect you with the Title IX coordinator, try contacting the superintendent’s office. Think of this process as a way to introduce AAUW to school officials and to build a relationship with your community’s schools.
