FALL FORUM
AAUW Arizona will present
its 2008 Fall Forum on the timely topic “Embracing Change: Framing the Future,” on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at ASU West in Glendale.
Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. AAUW Arizona President Barbara Neubert will open the morning session at 9:00 a.m. sharp.
Major
structural and staff changes have occurred in the Association over the past several years and Jeanne Clarke, Director, AAUW Educational
Foundation, will brief us on what members need to know about the implementation of these important changes. Rocky Mountain Regional
Director Jeanette Chavez
will review highlights of the Rocky Mountain Regional Conference as well as the new bylaws proposals under
consideration by the Association.
Our keynote speaker, Kathleen Cha, AAUW Director-at-Large and dynamic presenter of AAUW Leadership
Training at the Rocky Mountain Regional Conference, will travel from San Francisco to facilitate the day’s main event, “A Visible
AAUW – Membership, Marketing & Communication.” This topic was chosen by the Fall Forum Planning Committee based on its conviction
that increasing membership and improving our marketing and communication skills is vital to framing AAUW’s future image. Kathleen
will introduce workable strategies including interactive hands-on techniques.
Honorary Life member Claire Stein will show
brief video, “ Our World Through VGIF’s Eyes,” to keep members informed about what non-governmental organizations such as the Virginia
Gildersleeve International Fund, Inc. are achieving internationally.
Representative Linda Lopez will join us as luncheon speaker,
with a promise to bring members up-to-date on what has happened in the state legislature since April 2008 when she presented a workshop
at the state convention. During lunch there will be optional counterpart seating, designed to encourage informal conversation among
branch officers and members.
In the afternoon attendees will have the opportunity to select two of the following
three workshops:
• “Where the Girls Are,” a discussion by Kathleen Cha of the recent comprehensive research report by the Association
on girls’ educational achievement over the past 35 years, with attention to the relationship between girls’ and boys’ progress.
•
“Gender Issues in Affirmative Action,” an analysis of the current ballot initiative and other relevant equity issues by Alessandra
Soler Meetze, Executive Director, ACLU of Arizona.
• “Taking It to the Streets, Mission-based Programs for Women and Girls”
with Susan Youngdahl, immediate past-state president, and Patricia Zajicek, state Community Action Chair. This workshop will
include valuable “how-to” tips on completing a successful community action grant application.
The State Board and the
President’s Council will meet immediately following the forum. Please watch for a list of nearby restaurants where interested
members may gather for continued networking and refreshments.
A $30 registration fee for the Fall Forum includes an early morning
snack with coffee, a lunch with dessert, and workshop materials. A late fee of $5 will be added after October 21.
